At the end of 2015, Flemish folk bands received a call to apply for participation at the EFEX focus programme. EFEX, the English Folk Expo, is a three-day showcase and network event that takes place during the Homegrown Folkfestival in Bury, Lancashire, near Manchester. Because of the unique cooperation between Flanders Arts Institute and Folkforum, EFEX chose Flanders as focus region for the 2016 edition. The two organisations will join forces to reinforce the folk scene in Flanders, to enhance the visibility of folk in Belgium and abroad and to build a sustainable network.
From the applications ten bands were chosen and presented to festival programmer David Agnew. After careful consideration, three groups – Surpluz, WÖR and Trio Dhoore – made the final selection based on five criteria: repertoire rooted in the Flemish music traditions; artistic originality; stage experience or maturity; the international potential of the group or project: the saleability but also the sustainability of the project or band on an international level; the enterprising spirit of the musicians or their entourage: the professional support and long-term vision.
In addition to the musicians, a delegation of Flemish organisers, management agencies and national press will be travelling along. A compilation will be produced to distribute at EFEX and WOMEX the week after that. Furthermore, Flanders Arts Institute and Folkforum will cooperate with magazine fRoots to realise an extensive article on the Flemish folk scene.
The folk caravan will also stop at the Cecil Sharp House, the heart of the British folk scene, and visit the Flemish representation in London, whom is co-financing the project.
EFEX will take place from 15 until 17 October 2016.
