UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) heeft voor het eerst een internationaal rapport uitgebracht over creative economy. The world market of creative industries goods and services almost doubled between 1996 and 2005, according to the Creative Economy Report 2008, recently published by the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). The “creative” volume increased from 227.4 to 424.4 billion dollars, representing 3.4% of total world trade. Industrialised countries are in leading position, but the countries of the South have been increasing their exportations from year to year, augmenting their part by 12% until 2005 and reaching a total of 41%. China plays a decisive part in this affair, being the first exporter of creative goods worldwide and covering almost one fifth of the world market. Nevertheless UNCTAD remarks: “Unfortunately the large majority of the countries of the South are not able to exploit their creative competences for development”. For this reason the initiative “Creative Africa” was launched in order to draw attention to the continent’s significant yet unexploited potential in this sector and encourage concrete measures to promote the interests of governments and enterprises. In the group of industrial countries Europe is in top position. The “old continent” covers half the world trade, followed by the USA (23%) and Japan (15%).The report was composed by an informal working group in which participated UNCTAD, UNDP (United Nations Development Program), UNESCO, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) and ITC (International Trade Centre).
The document provides an overview on the worldwide trade with goods and services of such diverse sectors as: arts and crafts, books, newspapers, paintings, music and performing arts as well as technology-based products (film, design, audiovisual works, television and radio) and “new media” products (digital animations and video games). Creative economy is described as the driving force for economic growth and development.
This report is the first UN document on global creative economy. It was presented at a press conference during the UNCTAD XII conference which took place in Accra, Ghana from April 20th to 25th. The document aims at facilitating comprehension of the complex relations and key words shaping national and international debates.
