Biografie
Jiraan is a multi-faceted musical collective led by Shalan Alhamwy, featuring musicians from diverse musical backgrounds. The ensemble brings together the common ground between musical traditions to create a unique intercultural sound that transcends conventions. Established in 2016 in Belgium, Jiraan has a debut album “Sirto.”
The ensemble comprises a string section (violins, viola, cello, and contrabass), rhythm section (percussion, keys, and contrabass), woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone), and traditional instruments such as ney, oud, kanun, kemenche, and duduk, with vocals rounding out the ensemble.
In rehearsals and performances, the individual cultures merge, fostering a sense of camaraderie. Through improvisation, the group forms a non-hierarchical, socially cohesive microcosm, united by a shared pursuit of beauty. Jiraan exemplifies the idea that music rises above borders, politics, and ideologies.
