Biografie
"Since 1997 my music has been composed in a strictly serial style. Ever since the whole rhythmic-harmonic structure of my pieces has been determined by a series of 54 chromatic groups of intervals, the same way that living beings are determined by their genetic material. The series is the DNA of my music. Its assemblage is such that it generates systematically atonal and amotivic music. Despite this strict composition technique, I strive for an organically sounding result that transcends the serial substructure, in the same way that living beings are more than the genetic material. I am convinced that strictly composed music can be at least as expressive as its mostly more easygoing intuitive or more traditional counterpart." (Bart Vanhecke)
Bart Vanhecke werd geboren in Etterbeek op 3 september 1964. Hij begon muziek te spelen op achtjarige leeftijd. Hij volgde les in de muziekacademie van Tervuren en ging vervolgens naar het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel, waar hij o.a. een eerste prijs fluit behaalde. Hij volgde lessen in de compositieklas van André Laporte in Brussel en bij Franco Donatoni aan de Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Naast zijn activiteiten als componist geeft Vanhecke les muziektheorie, muziekcultuur en fluit aan de academie van Overijse-Tervuren-Hoeilaart. Momenteel voert hij een onderzoek naar de systematisering van atonaliteit, a-motiviteit en dissonantie. De werken van Bart Vanhecke werden uitgevoerd op festivals als Ars Musica, de ISCM World Music Days en TRANSIT. Daarbij werkte Vanhecke samen met onder andere Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Het Collectief, Walpurgis, Spectra Ensemble, Ictus, Jan Michiels, Quatuor Danel en Frederik Croene.
