Dirigent René Jacobs gooit voor deze Idomeneo al zijn wijsheid in de schaal. Het is intussen al zijn vijfde integrale Mozartopera, die hij aanpakt volgens een veelgelauwerd procedé. Jacobs vertrekt van degelijk bronnenonderzoek, werkt samen met geëngageerde musici en solisten en kiest zonder meer voor meeslepend drama. Met snelle tempi brengt hij vaart in dit vroege werk, het drama over de koning van Kreta die zijn zoon moet offeren aan Neptunus. De recitatieven weet Jacobs als geen ander licht verteerbaar en sprankelend te maken. Uit de verzorgde uitgave, inclusief dvd met the making of, kunnen we afleiden dat Harmonia Mundi bijzonder trots is op het jongste Mozartproject van Jacobs.
Even spraakmakend en verrassend als de Nozze di Figaro, goed voor een Grammy in 2005, is deze uitvoering niet. Jacobs kiest grosso modo voor het solistenteam van La Clemenza di Tito. Stuk voor stuk virtuoze zangers, maar vooral de jonge, frêle Koreaanse sopraan Sunhae Im (als Ilia) is iets te licht voor dit topteam.

Jacobs volgt het complete libretto van Giambattista Varesco en presenteert Idomeneo als een knap geconstrueerd muziekdrama vol Sturm en Drang...[] Jacobs zangers exelleren [] Zonder René Jacobs' opera-cd's is geen Mozart-discografie compleet.

Mozart's first great opera has fared well on disc: Harnoncourt's pioneering Zürich version is just reissued (Teldec 2564 69126-7) and Gardiner's version on Archiv is strongly cast. René Jacobs's series started with a boldly reimagined Figaro, but more recently the quirks outnumber the new insights. It's frustrating, because there are penetrating things here, especially the seriousness with which the recitative is treated, and the interaction of Richard Croft's Idomeneo and Bernarda Fink's ideal Idamante - the great quartet is moving. But fussy continuo, odd balances and uneven casting take the edge off a fine achievement.

This latest in René Jacobs’s Mozart opera recordings is well up to the high standard he has set musically and technically. I withhold a fifth star only because the continuo player sometimes seems to believe he is in a keyboard concerto, and I am a little disappointed by the small-scale Ilia of the soprano Sunhae Im. She sings well enough, but there is a lack of the emotion one has heard from other exponents of this role. On the other hand, Richard Croft’s Idomeneo and Bernarda Fink’s Idamante (a trousers role for this lovely artist) are sung with ravishing beauty of tone and a sure sense of style. Alexandrina Pendatchanska is a fiery Elettra and Kenneth Tarver a good Arbace. The orchestra is in excellent form, and the fine chorus is by the RIAS chamber choir. The anticlimactic ballet music at the end is included, and there is a booklet and DVD. A handsome and impressive set, but if you have the Mackerras you cannot improve on it.
