Het late werk van Lassus, waartoe deze zesstemmige motetten behoren, is een schatkamer van de retorische compositiewijze. De vraag blijft daarbij altijd, of je als uitvoerder beklemtoont of veeleer aanneemt dat het eigenlijk een verborgen kunst, een 'musica reservata' hoort te zijn. Philippe Herreweghe vindt een gulden middenweg: uit een intelligente analyse van het muzikale gebaar haalt hij verfijnde, voorzichtige klemtonen en evenwichten. Soms brengt dat de muziek van Lassus dicht bij Palestrina maar telkens opnieuw laat Herreweghe het verschil horen. Dat ligt in een grotere, zij het ingehouden subjectiviteit en in een persoonlijkere benadering van de grote vragen van deze Bijbelteksten. De oude man wordt eenzaam, en dat laat Herreweghe horen.
In de huidige mode van solistische bezettingen klinkt zelfs een eenvoudige verdubbeling van de stemmen al als een koor. Is dat verouderd? Iets wat zo mooi gedaan is, kan niet fout zijn.

Diapason d'or
Le Collegium Vocale, à l'effectif resserré à deux chanteurs par partie (et renforcé pour les deux pages majestueuses à huit voix, par deux membres de la Capilla Flamenca), équilibre et concentre dans chaque ligne une énergie rare. Partout, l'intensité lumineuse de sa lecture s'accorde aux gestes du compositeur: pas une seconde qui ne manque d'intérêt, pas un détail qui n'ait échappé à ces polyphonistes-nés, pas une difficulté qui ne soit résolue par un effet sonore perspicace et séduisant. A la richesse étourdissante de la polyphonie répond enfin la perfection d'interprètes en état de grâce.

L'orientation de l'interpretation peut alors se deviner facilement. Philippe Herreweghe et son Collegium Vocale privilégient en effet la contemplation, la verveur, la prière, l'aspiration à la sagesse dans la crainte de Dieu, comme le recommandent ces textes des Proverbes, des Psaumes et de L'Ecclésiaste.

The Cantiones Sacrae was Orlando di Lasso's last collection of motets, published in the year of his death, 1594. Lassus (as he was also known) claimed these 14 settings were more austere, "tauter and more powerful", than those he had composed before. But while the subject matter of some motets is sombre - one is a meditation on growing old, another on life's vanities, while the last sets part of the Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass - others are much more upbeat, including a hymn in praise of drinking. Above all, though, these are magnificent examples of Lassus's polyphonic art, his use of imitative counterpoint and his ability to weave it into imposing blocks of sound, or to fuse the voices (generally in six parts) into a single chordal texture. It is wonderfully varied, transcendentally beautiful music that Philippe Herreweghe and his 16 singers deliver with perfect poise and balance. The recording was made in a chapel in Ghent, which has exactly the right resonance, so the contrapuntal detail is never obscured.
