Het ensemble Explorations kijkt wel erg serieus naar deze pretentieloze muziekjes en mist zo de charme van het Panocha Kwartet met Jaroslav Tuma.

Dating from 1888, and based on themes from Slavic folklore, Dvorak's piano quintet wilfully aspires to sound part-improvised in its blend of infectious high spirits and brooding introspection. This delightful work's joyous lyricism and capricious rhythmic variations are intensely realised in this lively performance by the French pianist Frank Braley with the Ensemble Explorations led by the Belgian cellist Roel Dieltiens. Braley also plays harmonium with Dieltien's cello and two violins, a rare but charming combination, in Dvorak's earlier five Bagatelles.

Why this pretentiously named ensemble’s cellist, Roel Dieltiens, gets a credit for “direction” in two straightforward chamber works is a bit of a mystery, but the “exploratory” aspect of the disc – its use of period instruments, including an 1874 Steinway for the Quintet – makes it worth investigating. Dvorak’s masterwork, completed in 1878, is more or less contemporaneous with the instrument Braley plays for the recording, and the sparing use of vibrato by the string players lends an astringency that gives a sharper-than-usual focus to the fast, dancelike music: the vivace sections of the Dumka, the Furiant scherzo and the final allegro. Sometimes the tempi sound driven and the string timbres wiry, but Braley’s playing has immense rhythmic verve.

Ze spelen intelligent zonder pedant te worden. De wisselwerking tussen solistische passages en samenspel is prachtig. Een opname waaruit een evenwichtige aandacht voor de harmonieën ademt. Hier is geen plaats voor effectbejag maar wordt er gemusiceerd met het hart op de tong.
